We’re looking for a Manager of Public Policy, Canada to join Snap Inc. As a member of the Americas Public Policy team, you will be responsible for the public policy and government relations work in Canada. The role reports to the Sr. Director of Public Policy for the Americas, based in Washington DC. Working from our office in Toronto, you will be Snap’s main policy point of contact on key federal and provincial policy issues impacting the company. As the first policy lead in Canada, you will design, develop, and execute the implementation of the public policy plan for the country.
The Canadian Snap Team is primarily composed of Bitmoji Design, Corporate and Engineering teams as well as our go to market commercial teams which include Sales, Account Management, Marketing, Communications, Creator Partnerships, Measurement and other cross-functional roles. Given the growth and scope of the Canadian business, relations with the government, policymakers and other key public stakeholders are of the utmost importance. Ensuring that Snap’s distinctive voice is heard and accommodated in policy-making circles will be a key priority.
This role is responsible for development of positions on key local and regional policy issues impacting Snap and for developing effective strategies to achieve policy outcomes and mitigate risk. This person will work closely with the rest of the Global Public Policy team, wider Legal team, regional Sales teams, the Communications team, Platform Integrity and Product teams and, on occasion, senior business executives to ensure the public policy program supports business growth and protects the company’s interests.
What you’ll do:
Serve as the main day-to-day policy representative of Snap Inc in Canada. Further deepen relationships with relevant government officials, NGOs, industry associations, non-governmental organizations, and other influential stakeholders.
Work closely with the Senior Director of Public Policy for the Americas, the US Policy team, the VP of Global Public Policy, the General Manager of Canada, the Canada Senior Manager of Communications, and on occasion, the senior executive organization.
Be the first to act and respond to the appropriate public policy inquiries.
Participate in policy roundtables and discussions with government stakeholders and relevant organizations when appropriate.
Collaborate with Public Policy, Legal, and Business teams to analyze legislative initiatives, advise on risks and opportunities and develop company policy positions and messaging.
Partner with the Communications team to help them appropriately respond to Policy-related media inquiries, by providing the correct policy narrative that best represents Snap Inc.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Proven experience with the policy and political landscape in Canada and the ability for shaping, and working with, government officials, NGOs, coalitions and other stakeholder groups.
Strong tech policy understanding and existing relationships within government and the wider stakeholder community in the region.
Excellent communication and advocacy skills and sound political judgment.
Willingness to travel as needed.
Forward thinking and proactive ability on legislative, regulatory and public policy issues.
Ability to rapidly understand and master complex policy issues with business impact.
Must be a self-starter and work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of external groups and individuals, including those who are opponents or critics.
Outstanding personal integrity, ethical judgment and decision-making skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including comfort with public speaking and advising internal stakeholders.
Kindness, creativity, intelligence and an instinctual appreciation for Snapchat and its mission.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Legal Studies or related field; or equivalent years of experience.
5+ years relevant advocacy/policy experience with the Canadian federal government, regulators, trade associations or related advocacy groups.
Strong experience with Canadian tech policy, ideally working on platform regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Consistent and demonstrable track record of understanding, explaining and influencing Canadian legislative and/or regulatory processes including successful advocacy efforts that achieved favorable policy outcomes.
Advanced degree in law or public policy.
French-speaking ability, or conversant in the French language.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
