We’re looking for a Product Quality Engineer to join the Quality team at Snap Inc!
What you’ll do
This role sits at the intersection of product development, reliability, manufacturing, supplier quality, and operations. You will establish quality strategy early in the product lifecycle, identify and reduce technical risk, and drive disciplined decision-making from prototype through mass production.
The ideal candidate is technically deep, highly structured, and comfortable working through ambiguity. You can translate failure data into clear actions, influence at all levels of the organization, and hold quality standards while enabling the business to move quickly. This role has broad strategic impact: you will help shape how hardware quality is built, measured, and scaled across products and manufacturing partners. Additionally, you will:
- Own the end-to-end product-quality strategy for assigned hardware products from concept through launch, Early Field Failure Analysis, and sustaining production.
- Define quality goals, critical-to-quality characteristics, inspection methods, acceptance criteria, and quality gates for prototype, DVT, PVT, and mass production builds.
- Lead failure analysis, Early Field Failure Analysis, root-cause investigations, containment, corrective actions, and verification of effectiveness for hardware, optical, mechanical, electrical, and cosmetic issues.
- Analyze quality and reliability data to identify trends, common failure mechanisms, process variation, and launch risk.
- Partner with design, systems, reliability, operations, manufacturing, supplier-quality, and factory teams to prevent defects and improve product robustness.
- Develop and execute risk-based qualification, reliability, audit, sampling, and production-monitoring plans.
- Partner with product development teams to integrate quality into the NUDD and Product Development Plan.
- Drive supplier and contract-manufacturer quality performance, including incoming quality, in-process controls, outgoing quality, nonconformance disposition, and corrective-action closure.
- Lead Early Field Failure Analysis and Sustaining Quality activities, using field and production data to identify recurring issues, drive corrective action, and improve product performance after launch.
- Establish clear escalation paths and communicate quality status, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical and executive stakeholders.
- Use formal deviations, waivers, and risk assessments when exceptions are required—without weakening the underlying product-quality baseline.
- Improve quality systems, inspection standards, traceability, data collection, and feedback loops across the product lifecycle.
- Develop, standardize, and scale quality processes, tools, and operating mechanisms across products, teams, suppliers, and manufacturing sites.
- Mentor other quality engineers and raise the technical and operational maturity of the broader quality organization.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of experience in hardware product quality, reliability, manufacturing quality, supplier quality, or a related discipline.
- Experience leading quality for complex consumer electronics, wearable devices, optical products, electromechanical systems, or similarly integrated hardware.
- Strong knowledge of quality and reliability methods, including FMEA, control plans, statistical analysis, root-cause analysis, DOE, CAPA, sampling, and measurement-system evaluation.
- Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional failure investigations from symptom definition through verified corrective action.
- Experience with NPI and production phases, including prototype, EVT, DVT, PVT, ramp, Early Field Failure Analysis, and sustaining operations.
- Working knowledge of NUDD and Product Development Plan processes and their application to hardware quality.
- Ability to influence at all levels of the organization and drive alignment across engineering, operations, suppliers, and leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, standardize, and scale quality processes across products, teams, and manufacturing partners.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, test data, inspection results, and manufacturing-process information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to make complex technical issues concise and actionable.
- Willingness to work directly with suppliers and manufacturing partners, with up to 30% travel as needed.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with optical engines, displays, cameras, sensors, precision mechanical assemblies, or other high-sensitivity hardware.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and suppliers across Asia or other global manufacturing regions.
- Familiarity with quality-data systems, traceability systems, statistical tools, and dashboarding or analytics platforms.
- ASQ certification or equivalent quality-engineering training.
- Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical workstreams.
Success in this role
- Product risks are identified early, quantified clearly, and actively reduced before launch.
- Build and production quality gates are objective, traceable, and aligned to customer experience.
- Significant failures receive rapid containment, evidence-based root-cause analysis, and verified corrective action.
- Suppliers and factories operate to clear, consistent standards with strong closure discipline.
- Cross-functional leaders have an accurate view of quality risk and can make timely launch decisions.
- Quality improvements are sustained through effective process controls, standards, and feedback loops.
- Quality processes and operating mechanisms scale effectively as products, teams, and manufacturing operations grow.
- The role delivers strategic impact by improving product quality, launch readiness, customer experience, and organizational capability.
